Gender Neutral Parenting??

I have been saying this for years, but no one listens to a “crazy” person that “doesn’t even have kids”.

There are no innate traits that different genders are born with. I think we are all born with our own personalities and the experiences we have shape us.

Every time you tell your daughter to “act like a lady” or you tell your son to “man up” you are communicating the current gender expectations to them.

It’s clear that the socially accepted, so-called “gender gap” is of our own making. There is no longer a doubt that women are just as competent as men. Gender differences are guided by nurture as society treats boys and girls differently from an early age. Scientific research has proven that societal and parental expectations and perceptions produce behavioral differences that develop increasingly into adulthood.

That’s why it’s so important that you think about the type of person you are shaping as your child is growing. Every off-handed comment you say, every song on the radio, every tv show and movie they watch is communicating something to them.

I hope that children can grow up to be secure in who they are and not have to worry about what others think about them. Afterall … isn’t that what we all want as adults?
