Dwarf Avocado Trees for Gardens in Pots

I read this article on News Taco about the American demand for avocados causing Mexican farmers to cut the forest. The article even says that the cartels are getting involved. Eek!

A few years ago, I was growing a container garden and this might be the perfect time to start it back up again. Perhaps I’ll even grow a dwarf avocado tree! I found there are two varieties (Mexican or Guatemalan) that might work. You have to eat the Mexican fruit right after you pick them but the Guatemalan variety can be stored in the refrigerator for almost a month before they go bad. Score!

I found a page that gives tips for growing the trees, even from pits. Avocados are a bit finicky but I think I’m up for the challenge.
