Wish Tree for Adoption Finalization Party

I don’t plan on doing a Gotcha Day celebration each year or really making an effort to remember the specific day his adoption was finalized, but since this day this year is a culmination of a journey I would like to have a small celebration.

At this celebration I’m thinking about what activities would work. In the last year we’ve already had a born day party and a baby welcoming. For the finalization party I’m thinking about having a low key cookout that afternoon with:

The questions is which wish tree to make. There are two that I like for completely different reasons:

Pretty butterflies!

Pretty butterflies!

I really like the butterfly detail on this wish tree. This one uses a manzanita branch which looks nice against the color of the butterflies. She has a link to Blooms & Branches where you can order tree branches online.

Those colors go great together.

I really like the coloring on this wish tree. It looks really full and I absolutely adore the tags! She even came up with the suggestion of putting the tags in with the place settings.

Wish-Tree-Tags

It might seem like a small thing, but sometimes getting people up and over to the activities is a tough sell. Providing the activities right where they are might help them complete it.

I like both trees, so I’m not sure where to start. Perhaps finding the branches I want to use will help me sort it out. Next hike I’ll take a look around and see what’s available ….  or I could steal some plum branches off of the tree in my in-laws back yard …  LOL

Hawaiian Themed Birthday Party

Cover-Photo.fwSince we took the baby to Hawai’i to kick off his birthday celebration, we decided to theme his formal party Hawai’i as well. I went onto the internet to get some ideas and mixed them with the great ideas of a close friend and ….  viola!

Cupcakes-Surfboards.fwThe thing I’m most proud of is this surfboard cupcake tree. I made a batch of yellow cupcakes ($0.99 on sale), slathered some blue frosting on top (Pillsbury Funfetti Frosting – Aqua Blue from Target $1.80 on sale), used sugar surfboards (Sugar Decorations Cookie Cake Cupcake Swim SURF BOARDS 12 ct. $8.50) and glued a photo of the baby to a skewer as the decorative ornament. It looks amazing!

Everyone said that the sugar surfboards looked great and tasted even better. I’m really glad that I created something a bit unique that brought our trip to Oahu to our friends and family.

Drink-Deep-Blue-Sea.fwDrink-Island-Punch.fwThere aren’t very many blue colored drinks, so I bought two different flavors of Hawaiian Punch (did you see what I did there? Lol) and poured them in the drink holders. The special details that we added included the twine and seashells glued on and the little signs that we printed out and tied on with a ribbon.

Coconuts.fwWe had pineapples on the table, though they aren’t indigenous to Hawai’i, because many people think of pineapples when thinking of Hawai’i. It added a level of visual texture that was nice.

We also got some Whoppers chocolate candies and put them in a bucket labeled “coconuts”. I wanted to have some rock candy labeled “Lava” but they didn’t have it at our grocery store and I didn’t have time to stop by Party City. It would have been cute though.

Cake.fwI made another yellow cake, decorated it with white frosting and dropped some confetti on top. It was so windy, we were at the beach, that the candle wouldn’t stay lit. Lol

I’m really pleased with how it turned out and how easy it was to pull together in one afternoon. Everyone had a good time and it looked beautiful.

High Chair Make Over Ideas

I found this old wooden Eddie Bauer high chair at a thrift store for $5 and figured that it’s perfect for a diy project. It needs a LOT of work, but for $5 … who could pass up an opportunity like this?!

For $5 and a little paint this will be a gem!

Originally I wanted to sand it down and re-stain it, but after seeing these gorgeous photos I’m thinking about adding a bit of color! I’ll make sure to grab some Prepare-it from Porter Paintsliquid sanding agent, a few tips on painting wooded high chairs and a can or two of spray paint.

I like the chevron pattern with the initial embroidered onto the backrest.

I like this dark brown that can be jazzed up with a colorful seat cover. Not feeling the colorful table part though.

I like this colorful seat cushion. The paint on the high chair is a bit too bright for me though.

I’m looking forward to this project. He’s only 3 months now, but that six month mark is going to arrive shortly. Wish me luck!  =)

DIY Design

This morning we are going to try to update a Radio Flyer trike that we bought at a swap meet for $10. I’m up looking at DIY sites that did other Radio Flyer rides and picnic benches. While looking I came across this great Pininterest link.

My eyes are bursting out of their sockets with ideas!

I love, love, love this set of bookends! I'm not quite sure who to make it, but it's on my list.

Mermaid Images for the Nursery

Mermaid with a headwrap on.

Mermaid with a headwrap on.

As you know, our nursery kind of has a sea theme going on. I saw this image (below) of a Black mermaid with a little Black girl on Facebook and I had to post it for others to find.

What a beautiful image of a Black mermaid with a Black child.

That led me to seek out more images of Black mermaids. So … I decided to round up some more images and post them all in one place.

Family Tree With Thumbprints UPDATE

As you know, I’ve been thinking about decorations for an adoption baby shower for a while now. There are so many good ideas! I know we’re still a looooong way off, but I can’t help myself. I keep coming back to the idea of the family tree. I love, love, love the idea of doing a family tree with thumb prints from our friends and family. I scoured the internet to find a few different ways to get the tree image.

If you’re in the United Kingdom

Check out this one

I found these images online. I hadn’t even thought about doing some of this stuff. I love the creative community. Sometimes I want to do it all! Lol

Now … to the images!

Our last international trip was to Japan. This one reminds me of the cherry blossoms that Japan is known for.

A bit more traditional, but I love how this one has everyone’s names attached to their thumbprints. I wish I had a mini one of these in my office. So cute.

This one is super traditional, but I love how it’s framed in a way that it would look good on a mantle, on a shelf or hanging on a wall.

Which one is your favorite?

Do you have any other ideas for an adoption baby shower?

Make a Play Kitchen from an Entertainment Center

This is SUCH a cute idea! These folks took an old entertainment center, revamped it, and turned it into a play kitchen for their kid. Cool!

I saw it on OffBeatMama.com.

The orginal post is at GiggleBerryCreations.

When you visit GiggleBerryCreations the post shows all of the steps to transform this old piece of crap into an AMAZING play center! Here are the photos. Go to GiggleBerryCreations to get all of the directions!
