In 1810 Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costillo was fed up. He became so impassioned that he yelled out to his compatriots to struggle against the Spanish crown. That exclamation is known in Mexico as El Grito and it is commemorated every year in cities and towns across Mexico.
It took 11 long years for the Mexicans to win independence from Spain, but it was accomplished September 27, 1821. Spain didn’t formally recognize Mexico as a sovereign country until 1836 though.
It’s important for Mexicanos to remember the struggles that Mexico went through to create a fair country for ALL Mexicans. On this day and every day Viva Mexico!
